Background

As it becomes more popular there are a growing number of people who keep tropical fish in an aquarium. The age of these aquarists varies from youngsters to the more elderly. Why tropical fish? Well, cold water fish are easier to look after then tropical fish and I believe it is this extra care that is needed that draws people to keep tropical fish.

Because tropical fish are usally smaller you can have more of them in your aquarium and they are generally more colorful. There are more tropical fish species around so you have a great choice and can purchase the fish quite easily from local pet stores. This removes the need to import them from their original habitat as they are now mostly bred in captivity.But where breeding in captivity has been unsuccessful then you can have the authentic wild stock imported.

Because of the particular rearing that has been carried out regularly over years, the aquarium fish you have will probably not be the same coloration, size and shape of the original fish.

The Naming System

Practically every fish species has a common name (even several), which pet shops and aquarium keepers may employ on a regular basis, but if a correct description and identification is needed then common names are not adequate.

Carl Linnaeus was from Swedish and a physician, botanist and zoologist. He was known as the father of modern taxonomy and considered to be one of the leading lights of modern ecology. He laid the building blocks for the naming of species system called binomial nomenclature.

A relationship amongst groups of animals & plants has been used for over 350 years and is identified and established by this binomial nomenclature system. Finding, describing and ordering organisms is known as Taxonomy and has seven main sectors. These are; Kingdom and Phylum, followed by Division and Class, then Order and Family, and lastly Genus and Species.

The binomial part of the binomial nomenclature is a clue as to what constitutes a name for the fish. From the above Taxonomy list, the last two sectors, Genus and Species, make up the name. Although each term in the name is in Latin and it could be known as a 'Latin name', biologists have a preference for calling the description a 'scientific name'.

Due to the re-classification of a specific fish, that happens now and again, a fish can end up with 2 scientific names. This is as a result of advances in Ichthyology (the study of fish) and the fact that this new name is not universally taken up by all concerned.

In the event that there is no specific descriptor for the fish of a known genus, the scientific name would be the generic name (the genus) with species added on. In January 2010 information from a major fish database showed that fish species numbered over 31,000 and that 250 new species are registered annually. In fact, the total number of species of fish is greater than the rest of the vertebrates put together. That is, amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles.

Rag doll cats first originated in 1960's from a non pedigree cat in the US.  Ann Baker had a kitten from this cats litter and decided because of their affection nature and beauty they were worthy of their own breed and created the Rag Doll breed.  Ann also created her own cat registery – the International Ragdoll Cat Association and trademarked the name Rag Doll.

In 1981 the first breeding pair was exported to the UK, they were 6 month old kittens belonging to Lulu Rowley owner of the Petil-lu Cattery.  While still in quarantine a litter was born on the 26th July.  Lulu and her friend Pat imported another 8 rag doll cats help expand their breeding base. Rag dolls are floppy and docile in nature hence the name, however modern breeder are attempting to breed out the docile trait as they feel it might not be in the best interests of the cat.  They are famous for their temperament, are extremely laid back and devote their lives to their owners. There were once believed to feel no pain because of their nature, but tests have shown that they feel the same amount of pain as other cat breeds. They like lots of attention, and will constantly be with you whether that's in bed or on the loo.  Rag dolls have be called children that never want to grow up and will make a toy out of anything.

Like the Maine Coon they are a large breed of cat.  Rag Doll cats come in just 6 colours seal, chocolate, flame, blue, lilac and cream.  The chocolate and lilac colours are harder to acquire.  There are a number of pattern variations and these include: pointed, mitted and bicolour.  The pointed pattern is characterised by a single darker colour at the extremities, such as the nose, ears, paws and tail. The mitted pattern is similar to the pointed with a few extra feature, which are a line of white that runs from their chin, down their belly to their genitals, they must have white paws and chin. The Bicolour pattern differs from the previous two, with white legs and a inverted v shape patten on the face.  They will have a white belly and occasionally white patches on their back.

Their fur is long and while not prone to matting they should be groomed at least twice a week, neglecting to groom with eventually lead to tangles and mattes.

Marine tropical fish are popular because of their bold and bright colors. They live in saltwater environments. The fish are normally caught in the wild and require more live food than other types of fish. Their tanks have to be kept between 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit to replicate the tropical water environment.

To start, you’ll need a tank, sand, a heater, salt mix, a hydrometer, a protein skimmer and a pH kit. I also know of dogs that won't eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they're pigs and will eat anything).

It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who's? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too - like salmon. You can't say it's the ingredient. How come they know the difference?
