Do weiner dogs and labs make good friends? Would they enjoy hanging out while home alone?

We already have a one year old chocolate labrador who loves going to the dog park and swimming at the lake. However, we were looking for a friend for our lab to have while we're away at work, and hopefully for her to play with as well. The dog we've had in mind is a weiner dog, because they're adorable. So, my question is, how well would weiner dogs and labradors get along and would they play together?

• What toy breed dog would be good to get for a beginner dog owner who is afraid of dogs and their bark?
• What kind of dogs would make a good indoor pet; with children and cats?
