Tropical Fish Aquariums Seeing the colorful fish glide through their silent, lush miniature undersea world, almost like dancers in a tiny ballet, can be the perfect calming influence after a hectic and stressful day of work. What You'll Need To Set Up Your Tropical Fish Aquarium

In order to set up your tropical fish aquarium, you will need an aquarium, or fish tank, gravel for the bottom, an aquarium filter, replacement filter media, a tank heater, decorative stuff for the bottom of the tank such as real or imitation plants, test kits to test the ph, temperature and other parameters and monitor the infamous nitrogen cycle, fish food, an aquarium vacuum, a fish net, a tank scrubber, a five gallon bucket, and a pasta strainer.

Be Aware of the Responsibility Involved In Owning A Tropical Fish Aquarium It is not difficult to learn how to set up a fish tank, but there are some steps you should follow. First, you be aware of a few things about an aquarium setup. A tropical fish tank is similar to having a dog or a cat when it comes to the amount of effort you will have to invest. In order to be successful at having a freshwater tropical fish tank you will have to work at it. Tropical Fish Information You Need to Know - All About Classification

In this report covering tropical fish information the origins of tropical fish keeping are covered along with its background and the scientific naming formula that classifies the fish.

Background

As it becomes more popular there are a growing number of people who keep tropical fish in an aquarium. The age of these aquarists varies from youngsters to the more elderly. Why tropical fish? Well, cold water fish are easier to look after then tropical fish and I believe it is this extra care that is needed that draws people to keep tropical fish.

Because tropical fish are usally smaller you can have more of them in your aquarium and they are generally more colorful. There are more tropical fish species around so you have a great choice and can purchase the fish quite easily from local pet stores. This removes the need to import them from their original habitat as they are now mostly bred in captivity.But where breeding in captivity has been unsuccessful then you can have the authentic wild stock imported.

Because of the particular rearing that has been carried out regularly over years, the aquarium fish you have will probably not be the same coloration, size and shape of the original fish.

The Naming System

Practically every fish species has a common name (even several), which pet shops and aquarium keepers may employ on a regular basis, but if a correct description and identification is needed then common names are not adequate.

Carl Linnaeus was from Swedish and a physician, botanist and zoologist. He was known as the father of modern taxonomy and considered to be one of the leading lights of modern ecology. He laid the building blocks for the naming of species system called binomial nomenclature.

A relationship amongst groups of animals & plants has been used for over 350 years and is identified and established by this binomial nomenclature system. Finding, describing and ordering organisms is known as Taxonomy and has seven main sectors. These are; Kingdom and Phylum, followed by Division and Class, then Order and Family, and lastly Genus and Species.

The binomial part of the binomial nomenclature is a clue as to what constitutes a name for the fish. From the above Taxonomy list, the last two sectors, Genus and Species, make up the name. Although each term in the name is in Latin and it could be known as a 'Latin name', biologists have a preference for calling the description a 'scientific name'.

Due to the re-classification of a specific fish, that happens now and again, a fish can end up with 2 scientific names. This is as a result of advances in Ichthyology (the study of fish) and the fact that this new name is not universally taken up by all concerned.

In the event that there is no specific descriptor for the fish of a known genus, the scientific name would be the generic name (the genus) with species added on. In January 2010 information from a major fish database showed that fish species numbered over 31,000 and that 250 new species are registered annually. In fact, the total number of species of fish is greater than the rest of the vertebrates put together. That is, amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles.

Treating Ick in a Tropical Fish Aquarium

I have a sixty gallon aquarium with two external filters, five Angelfish (two mated pairs), six Lamp Eye Tetras, four Corydoras Catfish, one Clown Loach, two Pearl Gouramis, one Rainbow Shark, two Rubberlip Plecostomus (Pleco), one Xray Tetra,  and two Fancy Guppys.

The first clue I had that there was trouble in the aquarium was when I realized that we had not seen our Clown Loach in about two days. He normally hides in a big artificial log that decorates the aquarium but comes out at feeding time. We noticed a white "powder" looking substance scattered all over the aquarium fixtures and, since I had seen something similar involving other aquarium additives, I disregarded the "powder." Having a busy day otherwise, I passed the absence of the Loach off with the thought that "We'll give him another day". The third day of not seeing the Loach started my wife panicking so I began a diligent search for my reclusive friend. Peering in all the openings to the fake log I finally spied his tail through one of them. I was not surprised when I noticed the white spots covering his tail and knew immediately that Ick was the diagnosis.

Ick, a common affliction caused by a parasitic protozoan called Ichthyophthirius, is quickly lethal to tropical fish. It appears as white spots all over the body,fins and gills.

I haven't been satisfied with any of the recent Ick treatments that we've tried, so I reluctantly applied 30 drops of the current remedy, "QuICK Cure", into the aquarium and went on to work. The normal dose for this medication is one drop per gallon of aquarium water, but the instructions state that, if you have tetra species, one drop should be used for every two gallons. Needless to say, we have both Lamp Eye Tetras and one X-ray Tetra. I was feeling pretty guilty about not taking things a bit more seriously when my wife first mentioned the missing Loach and I started looking for better remedies. Upon returning home, I remembered once reading that turning the temperature up to about 85 degrees in an aquarium can aid in killing the free swimming Ick, so I turned the heater up as high as it would go (setting it at 83 degrees). We obviously keep our aquariums in the normal temperature range determined by the requirements of the predominant tropical fish type, which varies, in the aquarium, and then try to keep it in the higher part of that range.

The next evening the temperature was right around 85 degrees. Since I had more time to do research, I medicated the aquarium with 45 drops of QuICK Cure, trying to balance the risks between too much medication for the tetras and the need to treat the loach in a hurry.

By this time, I was noticing more tropical fish with symptoms of Ick. Both of the Rubber Lip Plecos (which are new and may have been the source of the Ick) and two of the five Angelfish have the white spots. At this point, the Loach is still hiding in the log, I haven't seen hide nor hair (or scale) of the recently purchased Rainbow Shark, the Corydoras Catfish are too well hidden to see if they are infected or not, and the Lamp Eye Tetras all look pretty good as do the two female Pearl Gouramis. The research that I was doing was concentrated primarily on web sites that I "googled". One of the web sites referred to the different remedies available at pet shops while another recommended raising the temperature to 85 degrees. Since I had to leave for work right after reading through this information, I treated the aquarium with a full dosage of 60 drops (thinking I'd at least save the more important tropical fish – sorry tetras), and hoped for the best. I noticed that my loach was now outside the log and in extreme distress with secondary fungal infections. I didn't have time to do much about it, so I threw in a dosage of "Melafix" by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals for the fungus

The next day, after working all night and sleeping for about 5 hours, I was armed with new information and was determined to solve the problem for good. Unfortunately, the Ick had already taken its toll. I knew that the first thing that I was going to do was to change a large portion of the water and clean the aquarium floor of debris as well as I could. While accomplishing this task, I moved logs and plants and uncovered one small Rainbow Shark, one large Clown Loach, one male Fancy Guppy, one Rubber Lip Pleco, and one Xray Tetra all dead due to the Ick (or poor treatment methods). After changing the water and retreating with QuICK Cure, I sat down for further research.

One website was particularly helpful and discussed the many different methods of treating Ick,  a few of which I had never heard of. I learned from this site that you should not use a chemical treatment and increase the temperature at the same time. I immediately turned the heater down and allowed the aquarium to normalize around 82 degrees, the high end of the normal range. I also confirmed that you have to continue treatment for about three days after symptoms disappear.

The Ick was successfully eliminated after seven days, but with the loss of the other Rubber Lip Pleco. The remainder of the tropical fish in this community aquarium survived. Obviously, I continued treating the aquarium for another four days to prevent a reinfection and on the twelfth day inserted the new filters.

The medication that I used successfully in this aquarium is called "QuICK Cure" by Aquarium Products,  which is very reasonably priced at .99 per .75 ounce bottle. It contains two of the most popular Ick remedies: Malachite Green and Formaline. If you catch the Ick disease early enough and follow the directions, it really works quite well

In a previous outbreak of Ick, which, oddly enough, was isolated to a single Angelfish (which had a secondary infection of body fungus), I had tried putting the effected tropical fish in a 20 gallon hospital tank  with another Angelfish and a Swordtail, both infected with body fungus, which I had been treating with the anti-fungal "Maracyn" by Mardel. The hospital tank was maintaining a temperature of around 82 degrees and the water quality was good. Upon introducing the new Angelfish to the hospital tank, I added to the aquarium an Ick remedy that I had never used before. (Remember - the tank had already been treated with "Maracyn" for fungus.)This was a total and quick disaster. All three tropical fish died within 24 hours. I can't say with absolute certainty, but I would strongly suspect that the combination of the two medications and the stress of putting them in a hospital tank caused the quick demise of the already weakened tropical fish.

I had read in many of the more predominant web sites and books that the best way to treat diseased fish is to move them to a hospital tank. The reasoning for the isolation is to prevent the spread of the disease to the other tropical fish. This sounds like it makes pretty good sense, BUT,  I always seem to have to treat the entire aquarium for the disease anyway. After my 39 years of experience keeping freshwater tropical fish, my thinking is why put any of the infected fish under the stress of a changing environment, which greatly weakens them further. Since the aquarium is already infected anyway, leave the tropical fish in the tank and treat the whole tank. I have to say that whenever we tried to treat sick tropical fish in a hospital tank, we always lost them. I get better results leaving all the tropical fish in the tank and, if I've caught the disease early enough, even the first infected fish survive. I strongly feel that hospital tanks have killed more of my fish throughout the years than any disease. Needless to say, we no longer have a hospital tank.

Tips for Keeping Tropical Fish Alive

Keeping tropical fish alive is not as difficult as you suppose it to be. There are only two things you need in order for you to make it possible: water conditioner and water treatment. You need to see to it that these two important factors are of good quality. One of the basic things you must consider is the water you use for the aquarium. It must be within the safety range on your tropical fish thermometer. Water conditioner must be placed in the fish tank and make sure that you only put in the exact amount needed for the tropical fishes to not jeopardize their health and lives. After a few minutes, it's time to add the water treatment. To guide you properly, you must follow the instruction specified on the package.

Typically, the absence of these two essential factors is filled in by a small amount of fish food added to the fish tank water which is vital for the tropical fishes. You can only add the fishes after a few days of waiting. To ensure high quality of water which is safe for your finned pets, you can purchase chemicals use for water tests. Although this process can be costly, this can be very helpful in keeping your tropical fish healthy and alive and for them to survive. Another important consideration in taking care of this type of fish is the water temperature. You need to make sure that it is appropriate for the fishes.

Keeping tropical fishes alive and healthy must be associated with keeping the aquarium clean. Thus, you must limit the amount of food you feed them. Excessive foods if not ingested can become dirt which is accumulated inside the fish tank. To make feeding better, you must feed them several times daily in small amounts instead of excessive amounts. You also need to see to it that you do not give them fish foods more than they can eat in three minutes. A part of the maintenance is to change water on a regular basis like monthly. Make sure that you take out 5%-20% of the tank per month.

Another tip for keeping these fishes alive is to keep the fish tank from direct sunlight. Otherwise, algae growth on the tank is likely to occur. Additionally, you can prevent algae from growing by adding natural, real plants into the aquarium and buying a fish at a fish store that eats algae. Keeping and caring for a tank filled with tropical fish takes profound attention of the fish owners or keepers. Conclusively, there are four key tips in keeping tropical fish healthy and alive: water factor; fish food; light, air, action and; keeping it stable. Temperature, Ph, dissolved oxygen, ammonia levels, nitrate levels and salinity of fish tank water can be measured with the use of home water- quality testing kit. These are few of several tips you can consider in order for you to keep your tropical fishes alive. Bear them in mind and you will not find it difficult to fight against different causes of their diseases and even death.

For anyone who considers themselves Tropical Fish Tank enthusiasts you should be familiar with the very popular tropical fish called the Betta or also known as 'The Fighting Fish". Without a doubt this is the most popular and common fresh water tank fishes that is available on the market. It is a common occurrence for people just starting out in this very popular hobby to start with their first fish being a Betta tropical fish. Along with its popularity it is also one of the easiest fish to take care of and its beauty is unsurpassed.

If you decide to go ahead and purchase a tropical fish for your tank and you decide on a Betta tropical fish, don't put another Betta in the same tank. This is because Betta's are a very aggressive and territorial fish and they will attack each other, sometimes there battles will be to the death. You especially do not want to put a Betta in the same tank with other aggressive fish. However there are times you can place some Betta's with other fish that are peaceful.

By choosing a healthy Betta tropical fish, you should have years of enjoyment. The reason behind this is because its lifespan would be much longer. Now some helpful tips that should aid you in searching for a healthy Betta fish would include checking out the cleanliness of the pet store where you plan to purchase your fish. Try to look around and see if the place is clean and if the other animals being sold at that store are well taken cared of. Take a look at the cages also if they are clean then try and get an idea of how the people that work there feel about the animals.

If the store seems clean, and the employees look like they take care of the animals under their care. Next would be to check the cleanliness of the aquariums. Is there a brown and green substance (which is algae) on the glass? Are the fishes happy, healthy and swimming around? If you see these aquatic creatures simply sitting at the bottom of the tank or gasping for air, this is not a good sign. Make it a point too, to ensure that the areas where they bag the fishes are very clean. Most of the time many people miss this - which should not be the case.

As for the appearance of the Betta tropical fish, their color should be bright and lively. Make sure too, that there are no tears in their fins and examine the fishes in a well lighted area. Make it a point that the eyes are clear and not bulging. Above all you want to avoid anything that looks like cotton or crystals that look like salt.

If the environment and the fish pass all of these with flying colors, then you can happily purchase the Betta fish and start taking care of it in the comforts of your home.

When buying fish, you are no longer limited to the selection available at your local pet store. In the present day, there are many reputable online tropical fish stores from which you can buy tropical fish and have them shipped to your home.

Brick-and-mortar pet shops provide you the advantage of being able to see the actual fish that you are about to purchase. They also allow you to browse and study different fish behaviors over time prior to purchasing. In most cases, these pet shops will also have qualified and knowledgeable staff ready to answer any question that you may have when you buy tropical fish.

Relying on internet based tropical fish stores will usually provide you with a greater diversity of available species. Tropical Fish Care - How to Look After Tropical Fish and Tropical Fish Keeping Tips

Keeping tropical fish is a great pastime that can bring immense happiness. Before doing so, however, there are several key points that you need to be aware of or the whole exercise could end up in great disappointment.

Before you set up a tropical fish tank, there are several guidelines that you should adhere to. If not, you may be endangering your tropical fish without even knowing it.

If you truly care for your fish you must act in their best interests, and no doubt you want to do exactly this. One common error that many people don't really understand is that there are some bacteria that you actually want in your aquarium (as they help balance the delicate biological life cycle). Do you know which bacteria I am talking about? I certainly didn't when I started out.

Katy's Tropical Fish Guide gave me a very good understanding into how to:

2. How to introduce tropical fish to the tank
3. Caring for the fish tank
4. Feeding the tropical fish
5. Maintaining the health of the fish

Before reading it, I really had no idea on what was involved. Sure, the people at the store gave me some advice, but it was never pleasant finding my fish looking unhealthy, let alone, dead!

I wasn't overly impressed with the quality of other tropical fish books that are available on the market. I thought a lot of them were overpriced especially for the information they offered; and they generally didn't focus on telling you how to get the best results using methods that don't require a lot of effort and products that don't cost the earth.

Both of these things I believe take the fun and enjoyment out of keeping fish. After all, something that costs a significant amount of money and requires a lot of work on your behalf can't really be deemed as enjoyable.

Don't waste your time with other expensive books or videos that promise the earth. Katy's Tropical Fish Guide costs a fraction of inferior products on the market, but the advice I received was far, far superior. Without it, I would have spent a lot more money, lost a lot more fish and probably would have given away the idea of looking after a tropical fish tank. Instead, I'm now extremely happy and gain great enjoyment from my tropical fish tank.

Starting a Tropical Fish Tank Hobby

Many people wonder why tropical fish tank lovers can get so involved in their aquatic pets. After all you can't walk them, remove them from the tank, hug or pet them, or run around the backyard with them. Most conventional pets like dogs, cats, birds, or even rodents develop special relationships with their owners. Tropical fish tank lovers have their own special interactions with their fish that you really have to experience before passing judgment.

As someone who used to think that way, I have become a convert. I still love my furry friends but acquiring an appreciation for aquatic creatures gave me a sense of joy, tranquility, peace and a sense of accomplishment - after all, I did become more responsible when I started my tropical fish tank hobby.

Now if you are a lover of nature, this is definitely a fun hobby to have. A tropical fish tank seems to bring you closer to the wild - in the sense that you can imagine how the ocean or sea probably looks like with all those wonderful creatures underneath it. Blue and crystal clear waters topped off by beautiful and vibrant colors of water creatures swimming around and enjoying the environment that you have created for them is pure bliss. This will definitely bring forth a feeling of pride and delight in you.

There too many reasons to even count why fish lovers enjoy taking care of their aquariums and underwater life. First, it brings about beauty and peace within the environment that is it situated in. It also allows you to relax and explore the depths of your mind and some even find themselves having this feeling of connection towards nature and life.

Moreover, you can also try to learn how to take care of your aquatic friends when you are away.

As for your aquarium, you need to consider things such as having knowledge on community tanks and pumps while having a routine schedule for your tank. You should also know how to solve water problems and how to do tank maintenance. Moreover, you need to consider how to maintain your tank when you are away on vacation. In addition you should decide where you are going to set up the tank and what you will need to get to correctly do the water set up and this is just the beginning.

In addition to this, there's also identification and treatment advice on some of the more common ailments suffered by tropical fish (including White Spot, Velvet and Fin Rot), which will save time and money at the vet's (not to mention potential heartbreak); information and troubleshooting tips on how to grow healthy aquatic plants; and time- and money-saving information on recommended products, which products aren't recommended (and why), and aquarium care. And all of this is in clear, easily-understandable language, too – which is a real relief, especially after trying to wade through some of the terminology-packed alternatives available on the market!

From a consumer's perspective, this safety-net does a lot to assuage any (hypothetical, as it turns out) doubts that I may have had.

I can't see how you can possibly go wrong with this. After trawling through the other products available on the market, I have to say that Katy's Tropical Fish – A Complete Guide has to be the leader in the field (and I'd say the author knows it too, since she promises to give it away for free if you can find a better-value guide anywhere on the Internet!).
